Mudgie’s Deli & Wine Shop, Detroit: Had a chance to grab lunch at Mudgie’s Deli & Wine Shop. Mudgie’s gets a significant amount of news and social media coverage. The news hype was not over rated, my visit was excellent, Mudgies has been voted best deli 7 years in a row. Unlike most delis Mudgie’s stays open late on most days.
What i enjoyed: Mudgie’s has a variety of sandwiches, soups, soft drinks, and a full bar, most items on the menu are under $13. Their menu includes starters as well as a kids menu, salads, design your own sandwiches, as well as 6 vegetarian and vegan menu items as well. They had 3 different soups on the menu this afternoon. They also have a brunch menu, after 5 specials which I want to try, and they do catering.
You enter through the wine shop which is around the back. I was greeted by a very pleasant hostess. The main dining area is in the front of the building with additional dining by the bar. The main kitchen is in the corner of the main dining are. The interior of the building has a very cool vibe to it. It has classic tin or metal ceiling with lots of interior brick showing with a lot of unique decorations. They music playing was awesome. They have a small court yard for dining out side, when it is warmer, as well as a really cool back yard with a fire pit. The staff was very up beat and the bar tender was very helpful in explaining how their wine by the bottle works. They have free WIFI as well.
Entrees: I had the Salmon Rueben sandwich which was excellent. Lots of salmon and an excellent sauerkraut. The rye bread was grilled nicely and it came out super hot. In typical deli fashion the portion size was large. I was not hungry when I left.
Wine: I asked about the wine list and was informed that they have wine available by the glass as well as by the bottle from their shop. The corkage fee is very reasonable only $8 a bottle. After discussing the wine options the bar tender brought out a few bottles to choose from. He brought out a bottle of Red Car Chardonnay which is one of our favorites. I got one to go to share at home.
Parking: Free parking was available on the street, I was able to park right in front of the place, that’s my car on the right hand side.
